Tips

Getting an accurate number

Find the stamp

Look inside rings and on clasps. 10K or 417, 14K or 585, 18K or 750 for gold; 925 or STERLING for silver; PT950 or PLAT for platinum.

Weigh in grams

A kitchen scale that reads to 0.1 g works well. Jewelers often quote in pennyweight (dwt): 1 dwt is 1.555 grams.

Skip plated pieces

Stamps like GF, GP, HGE or RGP mean gold-filled or plated. These have very little gold and aren't worth melting.
